My initial impressions were naturally infuenced by the brown vinyl upholstered seating with central aisle leading from entrance to rear. I took me back to my youth when the majority of Cafés used to look like this. That’s the kind of experience one gets from this place. Other than perhaps the absence of nicotine-stained walls and dented aluminum ashtrays, if you were to see this Café in a 1960’s film, you wouldn’t bat an eyelid.

On this occasion, I decided to hang the expense and go for the sirloin steak, chips and peas at £13.95. My wife went for the chicken dinner at £7.95, and the two teas were £1.65 per person.

For those that have read my reviews before, you will know that I order my steaks ‘medium’, to allow the Chef a margin of error. In this case, however, the margin was more of a gulf. The very tip of the steak was, indeed, medium, then it quickly went to medium-rare and, by half way in, it was so rare it put me in mind of a saying I once heard on the comedy series, Benidorm… “If you ask for it rare where I come from, they remove the horns and wipe its arse”. Did I complain? I’m British, of course I didn’t! The truth is, despite all the blood, I don’t mind my plate looking like a murder scene. The chances are, I'd probably eat it if it still had a pulse. My wife’s chicken dinner, on the other hand, I really wouldn’t have enjoyed. With no vibrant colours to the vegetables, it looked rather dull and unexciting. My wife wasn’t best pleased to find that the advertised quarter-chicken was, in fact, a leg – she much prefers the breast meat. Nevertheless, she said it tasted okay and that appeared to be enough.

Would I recommend it? As long as you weren't the type to expect too much.

Whilst on a two day trip to Scarborough, a combination of necessity and convenience led me back to the Welcome Inne, and little to seemed to have changed since my last visit. My order of a cajun chicken wrap with chips was promptly delivered and the rest was pretty much unremarkable. If there was anything worth commenting on, it was the hot beverage tarif, with tea and coffee costing a little more than one felt comfortable paying.
