As you will see from the photo on the right, at 11.45am on a Saturday in early November, we weren’t exactly queuing for a table. However, it was still all one might expect from a Toby Carvery. The staff, who more often than not seem to be of eastern European extraction, are pleasant and, for the most part, efficient. From a personal perspective, Toby Inn’s have always seemed to be a conveyor belt of sustenance; it’s in the front door, seated, queued for food, fed, watered, plastic card and out the door. On the up side, the beef was well cooked and, although I’m not a lover of the usual line up of veg (i.e. leeks, roasted onions, carrots, swede and cauliflower cheese) I did manage to satisfy myself with the beef, Yorkshire pudding, mash, roasters and curly kale, smothered in beef gravy. Incidentally, the flat object lying on top of the Yorkshire pudding is pork crackling, which I chose so as not to be too predictable. For the four of us, it came to just under £35 including a soft drink each, so it was quite reasonable.

By the way, for those of you who are not beef lovers, there was also roast pork, roast ham and roast turkey to choose from, or you could even have a slice of each if you so desired. Although we weren’t offered a ‘large plate’, it was advertised for an additional £1.50 per person which, I understand, entitles the payee to a couple of small sausages and an extra slice of meat. I’d pass on that if I were you.

Would I recommend it? Yes, though as a thrifty way of satisfying one’s hunger and not as a first date offering; at least not if you wanted to get into her knickers before the night was out.
