God's Gift

They wait in mile long queues for a pitiful bowl of rice,
I see a multi-million pound satellite beaming pictures of them around the world as they
die of starvation.
He abuses children because it satisfies his need to feel omnipotent,
I wonder, what can be done?
She cries because her husband has just beat her up again,
I find it difficult to cry, perhaps I’ve forgotten how?
They murder fellow human beings because they believe that their cause justifies the loss of innocent lives,
I challenge their beliefs with all my heart.
He inflicts pain and suffering on dumb animals because he believes it’s for the good of mankind,
I believe that there must be another way.
He lost all his friends when he discovered he had A.I.D.S.,
I wish I could give him back his hope.
She’s afraid that she may have A.I.D.S. because she was raped,
I wonder how many more times she’ll have to relive her experience in the witness box?
He talks to a whisky bottle because he believes it talks back to him,
I don’t doubt that it does, it’s just that it’s giving him some bad advice.
She believes she has the right to take a baby’s life because it hasn’t yet left the womb,
I pray that compassion will prevail.
She dies alone in her cold council dwelling because she can’t afford the extra heating bills,
I wonder where the “Care” went from “Caring Community?”
He preys on the elderly, conning them out of their life savings,
I shake my head in disbelief.
Some believe that this world was God’s gift to Mankind,
I think, if that was true, he must surely think that we’re an ungrateful lot.
